Yes, a license is required on every river we fish, and yes — we arrange it. Bosnia, Croatia, Slovenia and Montenegro each run their own licensing system, and requirements can change season to season, so we handle the paperwork as part of every guided booking. All you need to bring is a valid ID or passport.

It depends what you're after. Huchen fish best from early autumn through late spring, when the water is cool — many of our Balkan rivers include a summer closure to protect them during spawning. Grayling and trout fish well spring through autumn. Each river page has a month-by-month season calendar, and the Mongolia taimen expedition runs a single fixed window each year, typically September.

Bring what you're comfortable casting — most anglers travel with their own rod, reel and waders. If you'd rather not fly with fishing gear, tell us in advance and we can arrange rental equipment for the Balkan rivers. For Mongolia, tackle for taimen is more specialized (heavy rods, big flies) and we can advise or supply exactly what that trip needs.

Our Balkan rivers cover a real range, from forgiving lower beats well suited to anglers still building confidence with a floating line, to technical, fast water that rewards experience. Tell us your level when you book and we'll match you to the right river and guide. The Mongolia expedition is more demanding — casting big flies on big rivers all day — and suits anglers with solid casting fundamentals already in place.

For the Balkan rivers, Banja Luka, Sarajevo, Zagreb and Ljubljana are all realistic entry points depending on which river you're fishing — each river page lists its nearest airport and drive time. For the Mongolia expedition, you'll fly into Ulaanbaatar, then take a charter flight with the group to the remote camp — full logistics are covered once you book.

A 30% deposit confirms your booking, with the balance due 60 days before your trip starts. Trips booked closer to departure than that are paid in full at booking. Full terms are on our Terms & Conditions page.

Cancel more than 60 days out and we'll refund anything paid beyond the deposit. Inside 60 days, payments are non-refundable, though we'll always try to help you rebook for a later date if your plans change. See our Terms & Conditions page for the full policy.

Every huchen and taimen we guide to is released — these are slow- growing, genuinely irreplaceable fish, and that's non-negotiable on every trip we run. Grayling and trout handling follows the local rules and season for that specific river, which your guide will brief you on before you start fishing.

Huchen are ambush predators that demand precise streamer work, heavier tackle, and a lot of patience — it's a hunt for one exceptional fish rather than a numbers game. Grayling and trout fishing on the same rivers is faster-paced dry fly and nymph work, which is why several of our trips combine both styles across different beats.

Yes, meaningfully. It's remote wilderness fishing — multi-day float camps, long days casting large flies on big water, and no quick way out if you decide the trip isn't for you. It rewards anglers who already have solid casting fundamentals and want the biggest salmonid on the planet on their line, more than it suits a first fly fishing trip.

Requirements depend on your passport, and rules do change — we confirm current visa requirements with every Mongolia booking well before departure so there are no surprises.

Full board at the remote tented camp, all in-country transfers including the charter flight to camp, the full guide and camp staff team, and all fishing permits and conservation fees. Beginners are genuinely welcome on several of our Balkan rivers — just say so when you book, and we'll put you with a guide and river suited to building your casting and reading-water skills rather than one that assumes you already have them. Mongolia is the exception; that trip is built for anglers with fly fishing experience already.

Layered clothing for changeable river-valley weather, a good rain shell, polarized sunglasses, and sun protection even in cooler months. For Mongolia, add warm layers for cold mornings and evenings at camp even in September — we send a full packing list once your trip is confirmed.
