Huchen are ambush predators, and their activity on the Sana tracks water temperature and baitfish movement more than the calendar. Here's what we watch for when we plan trip dates.
Spring: April–May
As snowmelt tapers off and the river clears, huchen move onto feeding lies in the faster water at the heads of pools. This is prime streamer season.
Summer: quieter for huchen, strong for grayling
Warmer water pushes huchen deep and less active during the day. We shift focus to grayling and brown trout on nymph and dry fly during these months.
Autumn: October–November
Falling water temperatures trigger another aggressive feeding window before winter, often producing the biggest fish of the year.
