Fly fishing the Savinja combines genuinely productive huchen water with some of the most dramatic alpine scenery in our program — the river rises in the Logar Valley beneath the Kamnik-Savinja Alps and carries that mountain character all the way down through its middle beats, where the best huchen holding water sits.
The Fishing
Huchen Savinja Slovenia sessions follow the same core technique as our Bosnian huchen rivers: articulated streamers on sink-tip lines, worked through deep pools and structure with a slow, deliberate retrieve. What changes here is the water itself — steeper gradient and alpine snowmelt give the Savinja a different character than the Sana's limestone canyons, with more boulder-strewn pocket water feeding into the deeper holding pools huchen prefer.
April-May and October-November remain the strongest huchen windows, driven by cooler water and more active feeding. Through the summer months, when huchen slow down, the Savinja's faster riffles carry strong grayling numbers that respond well to nymph fishing and, during hatches, to dries — enough that Savinja grayling fishing stands on its own as a reason to visit, independent of huchen season.
The Savinja's proximity to the Sava Bohinjka makes it a natural pairing for a multi-river Slovenia trip: huchen fishing in demanding alpine water on the Savinja, and grayling on the Sava Bohinjka, within a manageable drive of each other. Few regions in Europe pack this much variety of serious fly fishing into so small a footprint.
