Fly fishing the Sava Bohinjka starts at one of the most beautiful sources of any river we guide: Lake Bohinj, inside Triglav National Park, where the water leaves already clear and cold and only improves from there. This is grayling water first and foremost, and some of the best grayling fly fishing Slovenia has on offer, set against the Julian Alps at nearly every turn.
The Fishing
Grayling Slovenia sessions on the Bohinjka are built around reading the seams between faster alpine current and the slower glides where fish sit waiting for food to drift past. Mayfly and caddis hatches through the summer bring grayling and brown trout up consistently, and June through September is when we plan most Bohinj fly fishing trips — stable, clear, cold water and hatches you can nearly set your watch to on a calm morning.
We fish long, fine leaders here to match the water's exceptional clarity, with small CDC dries and emergers covering most rising fish, and beadhead nymphs picking up the rest on days when surface activity is quieter. The river's mix of open glides and tighter alpine runs makes it a good fit for intermediate anglers looking to sharpen drift control without needing the technical streamer skills a huchen river demands.
While huchen occasionally show up lower in the broader Sava system, the Bohinjka's identity has nothing to do with them — this is a grayling and trout river, and one of the most scenic stretches of water in our entire program. Combined with its proximity to the Savinja, it makes an easy, natural stop on any multi-river Slovenia itinerary.
