Kupa River

Croatia's Danube salmon river, running the border with Slovenia through the Gorski Kotar forests.

Hucho fishing on the Kupa puts you on Croatia's most reliable Danube salmon water — a border river known as the Kolpa on its Slovenian bank, dropping cold and forested out of the Gorski Kotar hills. Where huchen have vanished from most of their former European range, the Kupa/Kolpa river fishing here still produces genuinely large, wild fish, which is exactly why it sits alongside the Sana as one of our core huchen destinations.

The Fishing

Huchen Kupa Croatia sessions look a lot like huchen fishing anywhere in the Danube system: articulated streamers worked deliberately through deep, structure-heavy pools, with long pauses on the retrieve where the biggest fish typically commit. What sets the Kupa apart is the setting — thick forest runs right down to the water for long stretches, keeping the river cooler later into summer than more open rivers nearby, and giving huchen more shaded holding water to work with through the warmer months.

We fish 8-9 weight single-handers or light two-handers here, sink-tip lines, and the same 15-25cm articulated streamer patterns that work on the Sana. April-May and October-November remain the strongest windows, with cooler water triggering more aggressive feeding. Between huchen sessions, the Kupa's faster riffles hold healthy grayling and brown trout that respond well to nymphs, giving the river genuine day-to-day versatility rather than being a one-species destination.

As a border river shared with Slovenia, the Kupa also sits at a genuinely useful point on the map — close enough to our Slovenian rivers that a longer trip can move between Danube salmon Croatia water and the grayling- and huchen-rich rivers of the Julian Alps foothills without long transfers.

Häufig gestellte Fragen

Is the Kupa a good river for hucho fishing?

Yes — the Kupa (Kolpa on the Slovenian side) is one of the few genuinely productive Danube salmon rivers in Croatia. It fishes similarly to the Sana in technique and difficulty, with deep, forested pools that hold serious fish.

Is the Kupa the same river as the Kolpa?

Yes, it's the same river — Kupa is the Croatian name, Kolpa the Slovenian one, and the river itself forms the border between the two countries for much of its upper course.

What's the best time for huchen on the Kupa?

April through May and again October into November, when cooler water pushes huchen onto active feeding lies. Summer huchen fishing slows, though grayling and brown trout remain productive on nymph and dry fly.

How difficult is fishing the Kupa compared to other huchen rivers?

It's a technical river best suited to anglers who can already handle a sink-tip streamer setup and read structure-heavy water. We recommend it as a second or third huchen river rather than a first introduction to the species.

Can I fish both banks of the Kupa, given it's a border river?

Our guided trips fish the Croatian bank and hold the appropriate local permits for that side. Crossing to fish the Slovenian bank involves separate permitting, which we can discuss if you're planning an extended, multi-country trip.
